MONDAY JUNE 10 WITH DAVE AND ANGIE IN CAIRNS

Dave and Angie Hartley drove round to our apartment at 10am and chatted for an hour over coffee. All four of us walked down to the waterfront again, seeing the IM facilities being dismantled.  Only Dave went for a swim in the lagoon.  We three walked out to the docks to show Angie the big yacht Octopus.  There was another write-up in the Cairns Post about this ship.

The results of the Iron Man were also printed in a special supplement in the Cairns Post:

Males: 1. Luke McKenzie         8h 17m 43s
           2. Kim Berkel                 8h 22m 16s
           3. Chris McCormack      8h 32m 50s

Females: 1. Liz Blatchford        9h 19m 51s
               2. Gina Crawford       9h 23m 14s
               3. Stephanie Jones      9h 31m 46s

We retrieved Dave from the Lagoon and wandered along the waterfront, where we found some old marine posts with Aboriginal stories on them.

This story explained the shape of the mountains on the other side of the bay, which looked like a pair of wings. We can call this the "Malcolm Fraser" story.

Some of the posts had holes drilled through them so that you could peep through and identify a landmark.  Brilliant idea.

Among the boats moored at the dock was an old freighter called Endeavour Bay.  That sounds like the spot where James Cook repaired the Endeavour at Cooktown.

Further along we came to a children's playground built around the base of a curtain fig tree.  It was very noisy, which indicated that the kids loved climbing on it.

Statue of the day was a pair of lovey- dovey turtles.
