TUESDAY JUNE 18 MAGNETIC ISLAND

Russell and Iva formerly owned a restaurant in Townsville and Russell is trained in French Cuisine,  so we are being given magnificent breakfasts for the third time on this trip.  He kindly gave us a lift to the Sealink ferry terminal so we could catch the 7:45am to Magnetic Island, locally referred to as Maggie or MI.  We noticed that the wharf opposite had a FANTASEA sign,  so we have tracked down the origins of our Wagstaffe ferry service.

The island looked idyllic as we set off,
We could also see Palm Island and Hinchinbrook Island (70 miles away). We saw the Fantasea car ferry and arrived at the wharf at 8:15.

At Nelly's Bay we joined a snorkeling and fishing tour run by Aquascene with Adam as a captain, guide and lifeguard.  He also supplied all the equipment, taught us how to use it and served a delicious morning tea.  We sped up the eastern coast with a light southerly blowing keeping us cool.  There are 28 beaches on the island so it is possible to find a deserted one without much trouble.  We admired the rocky coastline with big hoop pine trees growing right down to the water.

When we stopped in a bay Adam held a dead garfish out and a beautiful Brahminy Kite swooped on it.  One of our favourite birds.
