SATURDAY JUNE 8 CAIRNS

We wandered around the town in the morning looking for the Iron Man locations.  The start and finish are out on the point quite close to our apartment.  We got a good view of the town from there.

We picked up a handbook for the race and explored the course.  There were hundreds of entrants doing a lap of the swimming course today.  The Kids IM was scheduled for 2pm.  We had morning tea at the Lagoon Cafe.

We were struck by the huge yacht moored near the race start.  It was called the Octopus and had a helicopter at each end.  It did not look like a cruise vessel.

We found from Wikipaedia that it was built in Bremen and Kiel for the OTHER Microsoft man Paul Allen in 2003.  It is the 13th largest private yacht in the world.  Most of the bigger ones belong to heads of state.  Is it just a coincidence that it is in Cairns while Bill Gates was in Australia?

The local market is called Rusty's and is 100 metres from our apartment, so we spent some time there stocking up on fruit straight from the farm.  Cheap and delicious.  We had mostly fruit for lunch, so we
needed some carbohydrates and filled up on fried rice and chips from the Food Court at the Centre mall.  We are expecting a long day tomorrow cheering the iron men.
